Norwegian Hydrogen has acquired Aker Horizon’s hydrogen project in Rjukan, Norway, and plans to continue developing a 25MW production plant there.
As part of the deal, the green hydrogen producer will take over the existing power purchase agreement (PPA) signed with Tinn Energi, to ensure the project has access to renewable energy.
Additionally, Norwegian Hydrogen has entered into a Letter of Intent with electrolyser manufacturer Nel to deliver a pressurised alkaline electrolysis plant for the 25MW plant, which could be scaled up. However, Nel revealed last week that it will temporarily halt production of its alkaline technology in Herøya due to slow uptake.

Commenting on the project, Jens Berge, the CEO of Norwegian Hydrogen, said, “This acquisition provides us with an excellent opportunity to enhance our commitment and deliver innovative zero-emission solutions to both existing and new customers.
“At the same time, we look forward to realising the project and contributing to the green transition in close cooperation with local stakeholders.”
H2 View understands that Aker Horizons has the option to re-enter the Rjukan project as an investor and active partner at a later stage.
In 2023, the Norwegian government awarded Aker up to NOK 135m ($12.1m) to develop the green hydrogen facility in Rjukan.

Originally, they had planned to produce around nine tonnes of green hydrogen per day from a 20MW electrolyser system, with a final investment decision (FID) forecasted before the end of 2023.
