Especially in view of the current geopolitical situation and the growing scarcity of resources such as gas or oil, green hydrogen is increasingly becoming not just a source of energy but also a source of hope for a more sustainable world.
That’s reason enough for the northern German states to actively drive the issue forward, given that they arguably have the best basis for doing so: a virtually inexhaustible supply of renewable energy. Thanks to their 2,400km of coastline, numerous onshore and offshore wind turbines, as well as a high number of solar generators, these states are the largest producers of green energy in Germany.
That’s why the business development organisations of Bremen, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Niedersachsen, and Schleswig-Holstein joined forces in 2020 to make better use of this excess of green energy by forming the green hydrogen initiative, HY-5.
HY-5 aims to turn northern Germany into a powerful emerging region for green hydrogen in the heart of Europe, supporting both the German national hydrogen strategy as well as the North German Hydrogen Strategy. And as we can share here with H2 View readers, the region is well on-track to achieving the goals that have been set.
