The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has awarded nearly $13m to three hydrogen storage projects in a hope to advance renewable energy integration and cut emissions in the state.
$12.5m is destined for Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station, LLC which plans to demonstrate nuclear-hydrogen fuelled peak power generation, paired with long duration hydrogen energy storage unit, which it hopes will reduce emissions from the New York Independent System Operation electric grid.
Plans for the production of hydrogen from the Oswego, US-based plant were announced in 2021, which would see Exelon partner with Nel, Argonne National Laboratory, Idaho National Laboratory, and the National Energy Laboratory.
