New research paves the way towards production of green hydrogen

Researchers from the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) and the Institute of Chemistry and Processes for Energy, Environment and Health (ICPEES) have developed technology that produces green hydrogen through the exposure of nanomaterials to sunlight.

The international team has developed specially engineered and structured electrodes that split water molecules under the sun’s light, a process known as photocatalysis.

The INRS and ICPEES researchers said they were inspired by a natural mechanism: photosynthesis, to create the technology.

Splitting water molecules into oxygen and hydrogen has long been done by electrolysis.
