A study led by Ricardo and the Environmental Defence Fund (EDF) has found that South Africa has huge potential to supply the global shipping industry with zero-carbon fuels through green hydrogen.
The production of green hydrogen-derived fuels can help to meet decarbonisation targets and act as a catalyst for the country’s economy opening new export markets, supporting an equitable transition and create future jobs.
Within the ‘South Africa: fuelling the future of shipping – South Africa’s role in the transformation of global shipping through green hydrogen-derived fuels’ report, hydrogen and ammonia have both been identified as primary zero-carbon fuel sources that could be utilised in South Africa.
