New hydrogen refuelling station opens in Mannheim

A new hydrogen refuelling station has been opened at a bus operator’s depot in the German city of Mannheim, which will provide dispensing to both public and fleet vehicles.

The H2Mobility constructed and operated station at rnv’s depot on Schlachthofstrße will support the operator’s fleet of 13 H2-eCitario hydrogen fuel cell buses, that are being acquired as part of a wider ecosystem project in the region.

With both 350 and 700 bar dispensing available, trucks, buses, refuse collectors and cars will all be able to refuel at the Mannheim station.

Following trials of the Mercedes-produced hydrogen buses earlier this year, rnv plans to replace its diesel-fuelled fleet with hydrogen and battery alternatives.

Backed by funding from the State Baden-Württemberg, the operator will put 40 H2-eCitaro buses on the road in Mannheim and Heidelberg – where it opened another refuelling station in April.

“We’re delighted that we can now also send buses with hydrogen fuel cells on routes in our Mannheim transport area,” said rnv’s Technical Managing Director, Martin in der Beek.

“The initial experience we have gained in Heidelberg over the last few months confirms that these vehicles are an ideal addition to our regular e-buses and are particularly advantageous on demanding longer routes.”

It all comes under the Baden-Württemberg-funded H2-Rhein-Neckar project, which aims to showcase hydrogen technologies across the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region.

Martin Jüngel, Managing Director and Chief Financial Officer of H2 Mobility, stressed, “In the Rhine-Neckar region, the availability of hydrogen and the attractiveness of hydrogen in mobility increases with every new refuelling station that opens.

“In the region, hydrogen is already being used in public transport and by municipal companies. Buses and refuse collection vehicles are in regular operation and show that hydrogen has become an integral part of everyday operations.”

Christian Specht, Mayor of Mannheim, and Chairman of rnv’s Supervisory Board, added, “The cooperation projects at the level of the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region, such as H2Rhein-Neckar and H2Rivers, are therefore key to making Mannheim and the region fit for the future and independent of fossil fuels.”
