New Flyer expands hydrogen fuel cell fleet with 20MW Ballard engine order

NFI Group’s New Flyer has doubled its initial order of Ballard Power Systems’ fuel cell engines with an additional 20MW purchase agreement.

Up to 200 fuel cell engines will be delivered in 2025 to power New Flyer’s next-generation Xcelsior CHARGE FC hydrogen fuel cell buses for deployment across the US, including California, Washington, Arizona, Nevada and New York.

Last January, the independent bus and coach manufacturer announced it would purchase 100 fuel cell engines from Ballard, which, H2 View understands, were delivered this year.

“We’re thrilled to strengthen our partnership with Ballard and bring cutting-edge zero-emission fuel cell buses to the market,” explained David White, Executive Vice-President, Supply Management at NFI.

“As more transit operators transition to zero-emission fleets, they are increasingly adopting fuel cell technology to meet their goals. We are committed to supporting our customers through their journey to sustainability.”

David Mucciacciaro, Ballard’s Chief Commercial Officer (CCO), added, “This order demonstrates New Flyer’s continued confidence in the performance of Ballard’s fuel cell engines and the growing market interest in the value proposition of hydrogen fuel cell buses.”

In September, Ballard revealed major plans to cut jobs and streamline operations to save over 30% in spending as it prepares to weather a slow-down in the hydrogen market.

The company’s President and CEO, Randy MacEwen said Ballard experienced a “multi-year push-out of the availability of low-cost, low-carbon hydrogen and infrastructure.”
