Nel granted $5.6m in funding from US Department of Defence to develop PEM electrolyser technology

The US Department of Defence (DoD) has granted $5.6m in funding to Nel Hydrogen US to accelerate advanced PEM electrolyser stack development, with a hope of enabling low-cost hydrogen storage and resiliency applications.

In collaboration with the Engineer Research and Development Centre-Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (ERDC-CERL), the 19-month project will focus on reducing the operating and capital costs of electrolysers.

H2 View understands, the partners plan to develop membranes optimised for electrolysis, advance catalysts including high volume manufacturing and recycling techniques, surface coating techniques to reduce precious metal usage, and cell stack integration and testing in a full system at ERDC-CERL.
