Nagoya Port rolls out hydrogen-powered forklifts for terminal and logistics operations

The Nagoya Port Authority has deployed hydrogen fuel cell-powered forklifts for use by companies operating within the Japanese port, according to reports.

Tokyo-based gas firm Suzuki Shokan oversaw the project delivery, with Tobishima Container Berth, a terminal operator, receiving four fuel cell forklifts.

Logistics businesses Asahi Unyu Kaisha, Shinko Kaiun, Kamigumi and Toyo Butsuryo all also received four hydrogen-powered forklifts. H2 View understands that all the vehicles were refuelled with hydrogen while in operation for five days, between August 26-30, 2024.

Additionally, the Nagoya Port Authority, which operates hydrogen refuellers, is also tackling the challenge of how to deliver hydrogen efficiently within the port and harbour sectors, which will be crucial to ensure a reliable and seamless supply chain within the environment.

The Japan International Freight Forwarders Association (JIFFA) revealed that hydrogen was delivered every other day throughout the project timeline, as it takes one business day to recharge hydrogen into accumulators once it is taken.

Reports state that the hydrogen was distributed in parking lots and other unoccupied areas, although JIFFA stressed it would be important to organise pre-planned conversations to identify optimal refuelling locations to enhance social implementation.

Whilst it has not been revealed what company manufactured the hydrogen-powered forklifts, major Japanese companies Toyota and Mitsubishi have previously explored the development of fuel cell forklifts.

In March 2023, Fusion Fuel and Toyota Material Handling España joined forces to promote the development of the green hydrogen fuel cell-powered forklift market in Spain, under a collaboration agreement.
