MoU inked to decarbonise the Russian steel industry with hydrogen

NOVATEK and PAO Severstal have joined forces to decarbonise the Russian steel industry with hydrogen and carbon capture technologies.

The two companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Friday (June 4), through which they will look to develop a joint pilot project to produce blue hydrogen from natural gas.

Under such agreement, the parties intend to jointly develop technical requirements, standards and engineering solutions for the manufacturing and supply of hydrogen transport pipelines, turbines, hydrogen storage systems and hydrogen transport tanks.

Commenting on the collaboration, Leonid Mikhelson, NOVATEK’s Chairman of the Management Board, said, “Steel producers are one of the largest industrial consumers of natural gas, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions is a new prospective area for our mutually beneficial cooperation.
