Molten Industries’ green steel project wins DOE funding

Molten Industries has secured $5.4m to pilot the use of methane pyrolysis-driven hydrogen in sustainable steel production.

In collaboration with United States Steel Corporation and CPFD Software, the companies will design, build and test a pilot system that will supply a direct reduced iron (DRI) shaft furnace at Molten’s facility.

The approach will use renewable electricity to break down methane from natural gas or waste into hydrogen and solid graphite, which is reported to offer “a 75% reduction in energy intensity compared with electrolysis.”
