Mediterranean Shipping Company sees promise in hydrogen

Transportation and logistics firm Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has said it is exploring the viability of hydrogen as a possible fuel source.

Speaking at the Maritime Transport Efficiency Conference in Geneva, Switzerland, Bud Darr, Executive Vice-President of MSC explained that, as well as hydrogen, the group is also looking into the use of biofuels.

Darr, said, “There’s no one single solution to decarbonise shipping; we need a range of alternative fuels at scale and we need them urgently. The future of shipping and decarbonisation will rely on strong partnerships from both the perspective of technology collaboration and procurement.”

The company’s interest in hydrogen fuel supports the UN International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) policy goal to decarbonise shipping. MSC is currently exploring and trialling a range of alternative fuels to reach these goals.
