Masdar is moving ahead with plans for Southeast Asia’s largest floating solar power plant in Indonesia and exploring green hydrogen opportunities after signing agreements with state-owned utility company, PLN, at COP28 in Dubai.
The 145MWac Cirata project, located on the Cirata reservoir in West Java and inaugurated earlier this month, can operate at 192MW peak and provide enough renewable energy to power 50,000 homes. A joint study is now assessing tripling Cirata’s capacity to 500MW.
The companies also agreed to explore developing green hydrogen, and decarbonising hard-to-abate industries, including steelmaking, construction, transportation, and aviation. With abundant solar resources, the UAE and Indonesia are in prime position to become green hydrogen production hubs.
Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, Masdar’s CEO, said the Cirata project shows how innovation can be used to meet multiple needs at once.
