MAHLE to supply critical components for MAN’s 2025 hydrogen truck fleet

MAHLE will supply automotive components to MAN Truck & Bus that are designed to meet the requirements of a hydrogen-powered truck.

MAN commissioned the Stuttgart-based firm to supply components for the hydrogen engine of its MAN hTGX truck, which encompasses a direct-injection engine with six cylinders and 383kW of power output.

MAHLE’s hydrogen power cell unit consists of piston, piston rings, piston pin and cylinder liner, whilst further components from the automotive company will also be used in the valve train.

H2 View understands that MAHLE has already conducted tests proving the capabilities of its components, backing up the “high maturity level and already convincing suitability for series production of modern hydrogen engine technology.”

MAN plans to build around 200 units of the truck, with first deliveries to customers expected in 2025. The initial units are scheduled to be available in the Netherlands, Norway, Iceland and other selected non-European countries.

Last April, the German truck manufacturer said the 56kg hydrogen tank could be refuelled in 15 minutes with hydrogen compressed to 700 bar.

“MAHLE has successfully transferred its one hundred years of experience in engine components into the future,” claimed Dr. Roger Busch, member of the MAHLE Management Committee and Head of Sales.

“Our state-of-the-art pistons and other parts make the internal combustion engine (ICE) fit for hydrogen and thus climate-neutral. Today, we are able to fulfil our customers’ expectations in terms of performance, efficiency and service life.”
