LONGi ships 20MW of electrolysers to Uzbek green ammonia project

LONGi Hydrogen has shipped four alkaline electrolysers to a 3,000-tonne green ammonia pilot project in Uzbekistan.

The Chinese electrolyser manufacturer’s four 1,000Nm3/h (~5MW) medium-pressure alkaline electrolysers will be installed at ACWA Power’s project to produce green hydrogen for use in ammonia production.

Having launched its new generation of alkaline electrolysers in 2023, LONGi said it will be able to showcase its operations and maintenance service capabilities through the project.

Jun Ma, President of LONGi Hydrogen, said, “This is the first project in Central Asia for LONGi Hydrogen which [is] a significant milestone for global development.

“We are thrilled to receive recognition from the global partners for our technologies and capabilities. LONGi Hydrogen is dedicated to providing safe and reliable products to accompany our customers for global project development.”

Coming as ACWA’s second “utility-scale” green hydrogen project, following its 2.2GW NEOM project, the Saudi energy project developer broke ground on the plant last November.

Uzbek state-owned chemicals firm Uzkimyosanoat has already signed a 15-year offtake agreement for all of the project’s output, with renewable power being supplied by National Power Grid of Uzbekistan under a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA).

Backed by $65m of European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) funding, the project could scale to 500,000 tonnes of green ammonia production annually.

“This project marks a significant milestone in Uzbekistan’s energy history, representing the first phase of our collaboration. We are proud to be working with our partners to deliver the green hydrogen project, which will make a deep impact on the country’s ambitious energy transition plans,” ACWA Power CEO, Marco Arcelli said.
