Linde allocates $2bn to develop Canada’s ‘largest’ clean hydrogen production site

Linde will invest more than $2bn to build, own and operate a large-scale hydrogen production facility in Alberta, Canada.

The new clean hydrogen and atmospheric gases facility will support Dow’s Fort Saskatchewan Path2Zero project with the supply of hydrogen.

The complex is expected to use autothermal reforming, combined with Linde’s HISORP® carbon capture technology to produce clean hydrogen, and also recover hydrogen contained in off-gases from Dow’s ethylene cracker.

In its first phase, the project will supply clean hydrogen, nitrogen and other services to support Dow’s “world first” Net Zero emissions integrated ethylene cracker and derivatives site. Once completed, the Alberta facility will be the largest clean hydrogen production facility in Canada and represent Linde’s largest single investment and second world-scale hydrogen project.

“This landmark project aligns with our strategy of developing high-quality projects with secured off-take,” explained Sanjiv Lamba, CEO of Linde. “Our technology, experience and execution are enabling the transition to a cleaner economy.”

Last month (July), the industrial gas giant announced it would invest up to $3bn to decarbonise its operations and triple its amount of clean hydrogen production by 2028.

Worth $6.5bn, Dow’s Fort Saskatchewan includes an ethylene cracker and is set to increase its polyethylene capacity by two million tonnes per annum, in addition to retrofitting the site’s existing cracker to Net Zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions.

To achieve this, the Path2Zero project will use Linde’s air separation and autothermal reformer technology to convert the site’s cracker off-gas to hydrogen, which will be used as a clean fuel to supply the facility’s furnaces.

Jim Fitterling, Chairman and CEO at Dow, said, “Having support from collaborators and partners across the value chain is essential. We’re glad to have Linde as a partner on this industry-leading project.”
