Liebherr launches hydrogen ICE-powered loader in Austrian demo

Liebherr has unveiled a hydrogen internal combustion engine (ICE)-powered large wheel loader in a live demonstration in Salzburg, Austria.

Taking place at the firm’s plant in Bischofshofen, the prototype machine – L 566 H – is powered by a reciprocating piston engine manufactured at Liebherr’s engine plant in Bulle, Switzerland.

The heavy-duty machine manufacturer said although battery-electric solutions could be suitable for vehicles up to 15-tonnes, hydrogen ICEs “prove to be ideal” for larger machines with operating weights of up to 40 tonnes.
