If all announced projects are realised, low-emission hydrogen production could reach 38 million tonnes in 2030, but efforts to stimulate demand are lagging, according to a new report by the International Energy Agency (IEA).
The Global Hydrogen Review 2023 found that the potential 2030 production from announced projects to date had increased by 50% since the IEA’s 2022 report, but only 4% have taken final investment decision (FID), doubling from the year previous to a total of two million tonnes.
Of the 38 million tonnes of projects, the IEA says 27 million tonnes are based on electrolysis and low-emission electricity while 10 million tonnes are fossil fuels with carbon capture, utilisation and storage.
