KEPCO supports WGEH’s hydrogen feasibility study in Australia

Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) has agreed to support the Western Green Energy Hub (WEGH) in assessing the feasibility of producing hydrogen in western Australia.

WGEH Stage 1 is expected to deploy 6GW of hybrid wind and solar panels to produce up to 333,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per annum.

The feasibility study will cover the advancement of project engineering and cost modelling; collaborative engagements with Korean and Australian authorities and potential sources of project support; and integration of Australian and Korean firms that could partner in the project, including design and potential off-takers.

“WGEH Stage 1 is potentially significant in positioning Australia as a major participant globally in the emerging green hydrogen sector, as well as contributing to meet emerging demand in the Korean marketplace,” explained Ray Macdonald, WGEH CEO.

“Progressing a feasibility study with KEPCO, which is a proven global performer with large-scale infrastructure projects, and with its extensive national and international network, is invaluable to realising this potential.”

Chanhyuk Chun, KEPCO Vice-President and Head of the Global Business Department, added that the partnership with WGEH will allow the Korean firm to utilise the expertise and experience of the WGEH team, whilst expanding into Australia.

The Australian Government’s AUD $22.7bn ($15.2bn) Future Made in Australia (FMIA) package, revealed earlier this year, contained AUD $6.7bn ($4.5bn) of green hydrogen tax incentives.

The Hydrogen Production Tax Incentive (PTI) scheme will offer AUD $2/kg ($1.34/kg) of green hydrogen produced for up to 10 years.
