Kawasaki Heavy Industries (Kawasaki) is working to develop and commercialise the infrastructure and technologies needed to build hydrogen energy supply chains, ranging from production to transportation, storage and utilisation. In fact, KHI’s demonstration of these innovative, hydrogen-related technologies is proceeding at great speed.
The Hydrogen Energy Supply Chain (HESC) Project is a world-first initiative that aims to demonstrate that clean liquefied hydrogen produced through gasification of coal in Victoria’s Latrobe Valley in Australia, and liquefaction at a port in Victoria, can be safely and cost-effectively produced and exported to Japan. KHI has been a leading member of the HESC consortium and, in early 2022, was proud to successfully demonstrate this integrated supply chain that will put both Japan and Australia at the forefront of a hydrogen society and the global hydrogen revolution.
In January 2022, the Suiso Frontier, the world’s first liquefied hydrogen carrier ship, left the Port of Hastings in Australia with its cargo of liquefied hydrogen and in February was safely unloaded at the receiving terminal in the port of Kobe, Japan. This marked the successful completion of the HESC Pilot Project, and the first demonstration of the scalable manufacture and export of hydrogen fuel from Australia. The pilot project was delivered in partnership with the Australian and State of Victoria Governments, who invested $100m into this trial phase, with the remainder funded by the private sector project partners and the Japanese Government.
