Johnson Matthey opens Mumbai facility for hydrogen and clean fuels

Johnson Matthey (JM) has opened its new Engineering Centre in Mumbai, India, which is expected to support growth in hydrogen, sustainable fuels and chemicals.

The centre is anticipated to increase JM’s capacity to deliver projects for its customers across the energy sector and will help India reach its 2070 Net Zero target.

Harjinder Kang, Trade Commissioner for South Asia and British Deputy High Commissioner for Western India, claimed he’s delighted to see JM strengthen its presence in India through the Mumbai facility.

“Focussed on providing low-carbon technology solutions to the world, this new facility is another testament to the UK’s strong commitment to accelerating clean growth by working alongside indispensable partners like India,” he said.

Maurits van Tol, Chief Executive for Catalyst Technologies at JM, added, “India is internationally renowned for its engineering talent and expertise, and recruiting more talent is crucial to our plans to deliver more projects for our global customers across both our core licensing business and our growing business in low-carbon technologies.”

In May (2024), JM revealed plans to cut back on its hydrogen technologies investment due to slower-than-expected progress in the hydrogen value chain.

In the British multinational’s preliminary 2023/24 results, CEO Liam Condon explained that while JM is “well positioned” to benefit from an expected high-growth hydrogen market, “the development of the hydrogen value chain has slowed as the industry navigated the challenges around scale up.”
