Construction equipment manufacturer JCB has developed what it claims to be the construction industry’s first ever hydrogen powered excavator.
The “world-first” was developed by JCB chairman Lord Bamford and his son Jo Bamford who spent two years working on the construction of the hydrogen-powered excavator.
Following successful construction, JCB tested the 20-tonne 220X excavator, powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, for twelve months at its quarry proving grounds.
“The development of the first hydrogen fuelled excavator is very exciting as we drive towards a zero carbon world,” said Lord Bamford, JCB’s Chairman.
