Japan will need to replace its current imported LNG and coal infrastructure with hydrogen and derived fuels such as ammonia, alongside development of wind and solar, in order to decarbonise, according to a new Hydrogen Council report.
Owing to Japan’s limited renewable resource potential, the country will need to import hydrogen to produce power, with Hydrogen in Decarbonised Energy Systems forecasting that over 16% of Japan’s generation capacity could come from imported hydrogen and ammonia by 2050.
The Council’s analysis found that ammonia use in Japan’s energy system will only result in modest increases in the cost of energy from 2030 to 2050.
