Jacobs to carry out Pre-FEED efforts for hydrogen pipeline in London

Jacobs has been selected by Cadent Gas on behalf of Capital Hydrogen to deliver the Pre-Front End Engineering Design (Pre-FEED) phase for a British hydrogen pipeline project.

The East London Hydrogen Pipeline (ELHP) project, which is part of Capital Hydrogen’s plan to transition gas pipeline networks into hydrogen in London, will span 56 miles and be connected to major industrial zones for hydrogen supply.

Jacobs will deliver the Pre-FEED design for the project, cost analysis, strategic planning and consenting, environmental assessment and engagement services.

Upon completion of the Pre-FEED, the project is expected to advance into the full FEED phase, where final engineering designs will be developed in preparation for construction.

H2 View understands that the pipeline could carry up to 10 tonnes of the green fuel per day once fully operational, which is anticipated for 2030 – depending on the Pre-FEED and FEED timelines.

“Our hydrogen teams work collaboratively across geographies and sectors, turning transformational ideas into intelligent solutions to create a cleaner energy future for all,” explained Jacobs’ Vice-President, James Nash.

“This project builds on our longstanding relationship with Cadent and propels this crucial East London decarbonisation project to benefit the community and industry in the area.”

Capital Hydrogen, the collaboration established by Cadent, SGN and National Grid Gas Transmission, forecast that the ELHP project will deliver skilled jobs, increase energy independence and “offer greater choice to consumers.”

Angela Needle, Cadent Strategy Director, said, “Hydrogen is essential to decarbonise operations along the north bank of the River Thames.

“By ensuring a secure and reliable supply of hydrogen, we’re not only supporting the transition to a Net Zero future but also helping to secure the long-term viability of these major employers, safeguarding and creating jobs and driving economic growth in the region.”
