Power engineering firm Ansaldo Energia has been awarded €317m ($332m) by the Italian Government to develop 1MW AEM electrolyser systems for green hydrogen production.
The funding, secured through the €5.4bn ($5.7bn) Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) Hy2Tech scheme, will support Ansaldo Green Tech in the construction of a new AEM production line and R&D expansion at its Genova site.

H2 View understands the company will be looking to develop and industrialise 1MW modular systems in both containerised and “open design” solutions.
Capable of producing over 500kg of hydrogen per day, Ansaldo says its systems offer high efficiency, flexibility and pressurised hydrogen production while reducing the amount of critical minerals used.
The company has already inked a contract with Spain’s Jolt Solutions for the supply of its electrodes. The Sparkfuze technology allows Jolt to coat electrodes within “under one minute” to reduce voltage requirements for electrolyser systems.

Ansaldo is targeting deployment in industry, power generation and mobility, and has reportedly already formalised the sale of its first AEM system.
AEM is being looked at as the next key electrolysis technology, taking advantage of both alkaline and PEM to offer a safer and cheaper alternative. However, still in its infancy, the technology faces durability challenges before becoming widespread.
