Italian hydrogen steel processing trial gets underway

A six-month Italian trial has been launched to use hydrogen in steel processing.

Hosted at steel pipe supplier Tenaris’ Dalmine mill in Bergamo, Italy, the project will see collaboration with Snam and Tenova to use hydrogen produced on-site to fuel burners in a reheating furnace to hot roll seamless pipes.

Snam will build an alkaline electrolyser system to produce hydrogen for the trial, while Tenova’s 100% hydrogen-ready burner will be installed with the assistance of Tenaris.
