A blend of 10% hydrogen is set to be used in a commercial-scale cogeneration plant designed to generate electricity and heat from natural gas in Belgium, marking a first in the country.
The aim of the pilot project by chemicals company INEOS and energy giant Engie is to gradually replace natural gas with hydrogen used by the gas turbine at INEOS’ Phenol site in Doel.
If all goes well replacing 10% of the gas feed with hydrogen, this will be increased to 20%.
INOES said this is the first time that such tests have been carried out on an industrial scale in Belgium.
