Industry urged to improve communication on hydrogen pipeline safety

The industry must clearly communicate the benefits of hydrogen pipelines and the safety measures in place to reassure the public, according to Wood’s Global Technical Director.

Colin McKinnon claimed that while hydrogen will be a big part of the energy solution, figureheads in the industry must explain to the public the need for hydrogen transportation, telling the Hydrogen Technology Expo Europe, “I don’t think we’re currently doing a good job in that.”

He emphasised the need for leaders to clearly communicate the safety and environmental benefits of hydrogen pipelines, similar to the long-standing safe delivery of natural gas.

This call for transparency aligns with recent developments in Germany, where the Federal Network Agency approved plans for a 9,000km hydrogen core network (HCN), underscoring the growing momentum behind hydrogen infrastructure and the need for public trust as these large-scale projects advance.
