Indian PM shares ambitious plans for green hydrogen

The Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has turned his attention to green hydrogen after he claimed the country has fulfilled numerous Paris commitments on green energy.

Speaking at an International Conference on Wednesday (September 11), the Indian PM told attendees that the country remains “focused on strengthening existing solutions.” Regarding the fulfilled commitments, Modi added, “We are not resting on these achievements.

“This is where green hydrogen comes into the picture,” he said. Modi explained that he wants India to become a global hub for the production, utilisation and export of the fuel, building off the back of its National Green Hydrogen Mission announced last year.

The PM continued, “In such a crucial sector, it is important for domain experts to lead the way and work together. Particularly, I urge the global scientific community to come together to explore various aspects. Scientists and innovators can suggest changes in public policy to help the green hydrogen sector.

“There are also many questions that the scientific community can look into. Can we improve the efficiency of electrolysers and other components in green hydrogen production? How can we enable the use of green hydrogen in public transport, shipping and inland waterways?

“Exploring such topics together will greatly help the green energy transition across the world.

“We can achieve anything when we are together. Let us work to accelerate the development and deployment of green hydrogen.”

The country’s equipment market is forecasted to reach $50bn by 2030, according to the Indian Hydrogen Alliance (IH2A) – with 34% belonging to electrolyser stacks.

Announced just on Tuesday (September 10) were plans to develop a PEM and AEM electrolyser gigafactory in India, unveiled by Horizon Fuel Cell Group and Indify Fuel Cell.

Electrolyser firm Ohmium International also launched a 2GW factory in Doddaballapura, India, allowing the company to deliver systems across the country and the globe.

H2 View understands there are plans for the site capacity to double to 4GW.
