The Indian Government will launch five pilot projects trialling the use of hydrogen-powered transportation across 10 of the nation’s key routes.
Initiated by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MRNE), the projects will see 37 hydrogen fuel cell and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles tested for public transport operations and nine refuelling stations implemented.
Expected to be commissioned in the next 18-24 months, buses will operate throughout Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Kochi and Bhubaneswar, reportedly covering 300km on a single refill.
Furthermore, the projects have been awarded to major companies including Tata Motors, Reliance Industries, NTPC, Anert, Ashok Leyland, HPCL, BPCL and IOCL.
The government’s total support for the selected projects will be around 2.08m rupees ($23m).
In an online statement, MRNE said, “These pilot projects can demonstrate safe and secure operations, assess the effectiveness of hydrogen-based vehicles and refuelling stations, validate technical feasibility and performance, and evaluate their economic viability, thereby leading to hydrogen-based vehicles and refuelling stations under real-world operational conditions.”
The initiative has been launched under India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission. Recent developments in the nation, involving hydrogen hubs, floating facilities and an oversubscribed auction, have seen the nation’s hydrogen market accelerate towards its 5 million tonnes per annum by 2030 target.
