India has published a comprehensive R&D green hydrogen roadmap designed to tackle technological challenges over the short, medium and long term.
While mature technologies such as electrolysers, fuel cells and carbon composite cylinders are not yet cost-competitive, alternatives and other upcoming technologies promising lower costs are yet to prove long-term performance.
The roadmap focuses on developing new materials, technologies, and infrastructure to improve the efficiency, reliability, and cost-effectiveness of green hydrogen production, storage, and transportation. The R&D program will also prioritise safety and address technical barriers and challenges in developing a hydrogen economy.
It follows the approval of the National Green Hydrogen Mission by the Union Cabinet, earlier this year, with an outlay of ₹ 19,744 crore. The Mission aims at making India a global hub of Green Hydrogen production, utilisation and export – and a key component is to establish a conducive Research and Innovation ecosystem for renewable hydrogen in the country.
