The University of Sheffield has increased its green hydrogen production capacity after it successfully commissioned a new IMI Remosa electrolyser.
The IMI Critical Engineering subsidiary supplied the university with a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyser, the IMI VIVO, which will be used to research new low and zero-carbon fuels for use in commercial jet travel, such as sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs).
Now fully operational, the electrolyser is located at the university’s Energy Innovation Centre, at the Sustainable Aviation Fuels Innovation Centre (SAF-IC), which can produce nearly 140Nm³ of green hydrogen per hour and store up to 1450Nm³. SAF-IC will become the “first” centre in the UK with the capacity to produce, test, and validate new fuels from a single location.
The new PEM electrolyser uses a turnkey configuration, including a low-pressure storage system that was adapted for the University’s research. The green hydrogen it produces can replace the natural gas, therefore further supporting the university’s work.
