IGD calls for early leak detection in compact electrolyser systems

Hydrogen operators should adopt advanced, integrated gas detection systems to ensure the safe expansion of containerised electrolyser systems, according to a new whitepaper.

Hosted on h2-view.com, the whitepaper by International Gas Detectors (IGD) said that integrated detection systems, capable of monitoring both hydrogen and oxygen, will be essential to prevent leaks and potential explosions in compact, confined electrolyser setups.

According to IGD, containerised electrolysers – often praised for their flexibility and modularity – bring specific safety challenges.

“Containerised hydrogen generator applications in particular present an elevated oxygen hazard due to the process of electrolysis releasing a large by-product of oxygen, if leaked.

“Elevated levels of oxygen will increase the flammability potential in the atmosphere. With an already highly flammable substance like hydrogen present, an oxygen leakage can make the possibility of an explosion far more likely,” the paper reads.

However, by using integrated hydrogen and oxygen detection, operators can leverage early, low-level leak detection to reduce risks and maintain a safe environment.

Based on the UK firm’s experience with electrolyser manufacturers in 20ft and 40ft containerised solutions, it suggests using detection systems that automate gas detection, protection of personnel and safe shutdown.
