Hyundai recalls all Nexo SUVs in North America over potential hydrogen leak

Hyundai is recalling all 1,600 Nexo hydrogen fuel cell vehicles across the US and Canada due to concerns over hydrogen leakage.

Owners have been told to park the SUVs outdoors and away from structures due to the potential risk of a fire that could be caused by a hydrogen leak.

While there have been no reports of a fire related to the Hyundai Nexo, local Hyundai dealers will replace the pressure release devices in the vehicle starting from December 10, 2024.

A notice released by the automotive major stated, “The thermally activated pressure relief device (TPRD) may break and cause a hydrogen gas leak, which can result in a fire while parked.

“Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall remedy is completed. Dealers will replace the TPRD free of charge.”

H2 View understands that the fuel cell-powered vehicle can still be driven.

In May 2021, the Nexo broke the world record for the longest distance travelled in a hydrogen-powered vehicle on a single tank in Australia.

Following this, sales surged in North America, with Hyundai reporting a 72% increase in the US when compared to 2020 results.

Nexo was the technological flagship of Hyundai’s growing eco-vehicle portfolio.
