Hysata signs dual JDAs with Korean steelmaker to advance efficient electrolysis

Australian electrolyser firm Hysata has signed joint development agreements (JDAs) with South Korean steelmaker POSCO as it looks to advance its novel green hydrogen production technology.

The two JDAs were signed with POSCO Holdings and POSCO Eco & Challenge (E&C) to work on material R&D and electrolyser construction, respectively.

Under the Holdings JDA, both companies will provide technical knowledge to jointly develop materials and systems for the electrolysers. The E&C collaboration will focus on construction.

Hysata’s novel capillary-fed electrolyser technology eliminates the need for traditional liquid electrolyte reservoirs found in alkaline and PEM systems.

By using capillary action to deliver the electrolyte to the reaction sites, it claims to reduce resistance losses significantly and deliver an electrical efficiency of 95% (41.5kWh/kg of hydrogen) – surpassing commercial systems with efficiencies of 70-75%.

The JDAs come after Hysata secured investment from both POSCO Holdings and E&C in its $111m Series B round earlier this year. The companies have not announced any plans to partner on deployments.

“This is an important partnership that leverages Hysata’s groundbreaking electrolysis cell technology and POSCO Group’s extensive expertise in materials, system development, engineering and construction of innovative technologies,” said Hysata CEO, Paul Barrett.

“Through this collaboration, we aim to accelerate the development of Hysata’s next-generation electrolyser technology. Our 41.5 kWh/kg H2 system efficiency will drive down the levelised cost of hydrogen and transform the economics of green hydrogen production.”

POSCO Holding’s head of clean hydrogen research, Dr. Juwoung Yoon, added, “This joint development effort is poised to accelerate global green hydrogen advancements, contributing to decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors, including steelmaking.”
