Rio Tinto has appointed Dean Dalla Valle – who became Hysata’s inaugural Chair this month – and Susan Lloyd-Hurwitz as non-executive directors.
Valle brings his insights in the hydrogen and electrolysis field as the mining giant steps up decarbonisation during the energy transition, and draws on four decades of operational and project management experience in the resources and infrastructure sectors, having also previously been Chief Commercial Officer at BHP and CEO of Pacific National.
Rio Tinto has partnered with the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) to study whether hydrogen can replace natural gas in alumina refineries to reduce emissions, and partnered with Sumitomo Corporation to study the construction of a hydrogen pilot plant at Rio Tinto’s Yarwun alumina refinery in Gladstone and explore the potential use of hydrogen at the refinery.
Both Valle and Lloyd-Hurwitz – CEO and Managing Director of Mirvac Group for over 10 years – will join the board on June 1 and stand for election at the annual general meetings of the company in 2024.
