Schiphol Airport will conduct the first test of a hydrogen-powered ground power unit (GPU), supplying stationary aircraft with power.
The system was developed by Dutch startup zepp.solutions in collaboration with Dynell, an Austrian GPU manufacturer. The two companies will support the Dutch airport in achieving its goals of being emissions-free on all ground operations, which is expected to be the “world’s first” use of a hydrogen-powered GPU.
Some electric GPU’s are already installed at the airport’s gates, however they have to be moved to charging points when recharging. A hydrogen GPU can be refuelled by a tanker truck on site, and they’re also reported to provide larger capacities for operations, similar to a diesel GPU.
H2 View understands that green hydrogen will be used for the tests, produced without CO2 emissions with electricity from the sun and wind.
