Hydrogen refuelling projects allocated €33m in latest EU AFIF funding round

The European Commission has committed €33m ($34.2m) to expanding hydrogen refuelling stations across the continent through its Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF).

In total, €422m ($438m) has been allocated to 39 alternative fuel projects in Europe, with eight of these focusing on hydrogen infrastructure throughout Spain, France and Germany.

Additionally, two of the projects will include the deployment of a small electrolyser to supply the refuelling stations with hydrogen. This includes HyLandAir, which has secured €5.6m ($5.8m) and will install two stations at Charles de Gaulle Aiport, powered by a 5MW electrolyser.

Almost €30m ($31m) has been allocated for an ammonia and methanol bunkering facility in Europe.

Up to €1bn will be available for the 2024-25 AFIF phase and applications remain open until June 11, 2025.

“The 39 projects we are supporting today will accelerate the deployment of critical recharging and refuelling infrastructure needed for our expanding zero-emission fleets,” the Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, said.

“Together, they will add nearly 5,000 new charging points, including 626 mega-watt chargers, helping citizens choose zero-emission vehicles and contribute to a cleaner environment.”

Last year, the EU selected 42 new infrastructure projects to receive more than €424m ($450m) in funding under AFIF, which included 48 hydrogen refuelling stations.
