Hydrogen projects planned for the south west by WWU

Wales & West Utilities (WWU) will develop two hydrogen projects in the UK together with the South West Conceptual Plan (SWCP) and Decentralised Alliance for South West Hydrogen (DASH).

Both SWCP and DASH will jointly consider what infrastructure the south west region needs and the potential of using hydrogen to meet decarbonisation targets.

H2 View understands that the projects will explore the potential for hydrogen development and usage and “consider how the network’s existing extensive infrastructure can be harnessed to deliver a low-carbon network for industry.”

SWCP is expected to develop options for a local hydrogen transmission system based on a map of production and demand, considering existing gas users and the potential for new users in the marine and aviation industries. The plan will also explore how WWU’s natural gas network can be repurposed for hydrogen.

DASH will study the south west’s “relatively dispersed industrial demands,” which don’t form a natural cluster. Additionally, it will examine the potential for onshore and offshore renewables and the viability of decentralised hydrogen infrastructure, based on intermittent renewable generation.

“Across the south west, people rely on the gas network today for safe, reliable and cost-effective energy – and that includes thousands of industrial customers and tens of thousands of other commercial businesses,” explained WWU’s Head of Net Zero & Sustainability, Matt Hindle.

“We need to find low carbon solutions for all energy users, along with homes and power generation, and hydrogen has a big role to play.”

The company currently brings energy to 7.5 million people across the south west of England and Wales, with 19 green gas production sites injecting biomethane into the region’s network.
