Solar Foods is currently developing the “world’s most sustainable food” using hydrogen, the company said at the Generation Hydrogen event today (May 19).
During the Deep Dive: Hydrogen for Food session, Petri Tervasmäki, Head of Bioprocess Development at Solar Foods, discussed how hydrogen is being utilised by the Finnish start-up company to produce a protein powder called Solein.
Renewable electricity from solar and wind is used to power an electrolyser to produce hydrogen that is then combined with carbon dioxide, water, vitamins and minerals to grow a microbial biomass that can be used as an edible protein.
