Hydrogen-powered research vessel design receives AiP

Glosten’s hydrogen-hybrid research vessel design has received Approval in Principle (AiP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).

The marine engineering firm will now lead the design of US San Diego’s fuel cell-powered Coastal-Class Research Vessel (CCRV) with support from electrical integrator Siemens Energy, and make it ready to be operated by Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

Before the AiP submission, Glosten completed a week-long risk assessment workshop with the US Coast Guard (USCG), ABS, Scripps, Sandia, Siemens Energy and fuel cell and equipment suppliers Ballard Power Systems and Chart Industries.

Scripps is expected to use the CCRV to support its researchers in studying the marine ecosystem along the California coast, serving as an “integral” tool in training new scientists, leaders and policymakers.
