Hydrogen-powered furnace set to clean up UK oil refinery

A multi-million pound hydrogen-powered furnace has been delivered to the Port of Liverpool, UK, ahead of its final destination at Essar Stanlow in Ellesmere Port, to clean up Essar Oil UK’s (EOUK) refinery operations.

The furnace is set replace three existing furnaces and is expected to run off a 100% hydrogen fuel source from 2026, contributing to Essar’s strategy at Stanlow to become the UK’s first low-carbon refinery.

Essar have said it plans to source hydrogen for the furnace, from its joint venture with Progressive Energy, Vertex Hydrogen, which unveiled plans for a 1GW hydrogen production hub which will be a central part of the HyNet cluster.
