Hydrogen-powered air taxi completes 523-mile Californian flight demonstration

Joby Aviation has successfully trialled a hydrogen-electric air taxi demonstrator, seeing the aircraft complete a 523-mile flight above California, US.

Marking what is said to be the “first” forward flight of a vertical take-off and landing aircraft powered by liquid hydrogen, the demonstration above Marina last month saw the aircraft land with 10% of its hydrogen capacity remaining.

The demonstrator, which uses up to 40kg of liquid hydrogen, uses a hydrogen fuel cell system designed and built by Joby’s Germany subsidiary H2FLY, which completed the “first” manned flight of a liquid hydrogen fuel cell aircraft last year.
