Hydrogen generators power construction site in Canvey Island

For the past four weeks, a construction site at Canvey Island, the UK, has used a hydrogen fuel cell generator to power its operations.

Together with principal contractor Balfour Beatty and the Environmental Agency, Sunbelt Rentals UK chose Hydrolgoiq and the EODev GEH2 generator to support the project.

Throughout the trial, the construction site consumed 202.5kg of green hydrogen, generated 3,310kWh of energy at an average 49% efficiency and reportedly saved 4256kg of CO2 equivalent – eliminating scope 1 emissions associated with powering the compound.

The statement released by Sunbelt claimed the hydrogen fuel “successfully supported an off-grid temporary power application and delivered a sizeable reduction in carbon emissions.”

Aran Bates, Hydrologiq’s CEO, said, “As consensus grows that hydrogen plays a key role in removing diesel from construction sites, the key to its acceptance lies in seamless integration.

“We need collaboration across the entire supply chain, ensuring that the physical, digital, process and regulatory pieces all come together to unlock the true potential of this fuel source.”

Last year, Hydrologiq took part in the “world’s first” hydrogen-powered film shoot for Toyota. The firm provided its 110kVa fuel cell generators to power the production of a light show.

The hydrogen-powered generators powered 14 projectors which performed a light show in February 2023. The green hydrogen was produced via wind and solar energy and delivered to the site in a tube trailer.
