Green hydrogen and ammonia are both sustainable and scalable solutions for shipping and EU maritime fuel policy needs to send a “clear demand signal” to potential investors by focusing on these green fuels and their relevant propulsion technologies.
That’s what Hydrogen Europe and T&E have said in a joint letter sent to the European Commission, calling on it to stimulate within the framework of the FuelEU Maritime intiative deployment of green hydrogen and ammonia from shipping.
Addressed to Executive Vice-President Frans Timmermans, Transport Commissioner Adina Valean, Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson and Commissioner Thierry Breton, the letter says whilst there are many potential alternative fuels for shipping, not all are as equally promising as green hydrogen and ammonia.
Solutions to be stimulated by the FuelEU maritime initiative need to be sought among technologies that can be both sustainable and scalable, the letter says.
