A piling-rig that runs on a dual-fuel hydrogen and diesel system has been tested at a construction site in London, UK, for the HS2 high speed rail project.
The rig was converted to a system, developed by ULEMCo and Cementation Skanska, in which both diesel and biofuels (HVO) can be mixed with hydrogen to reduce fuel use and lower carbon dioxide emissions.
As part of the trial, four 30-metre deep piles were installed using the rig, which the companies believe is the first time that hydrogen fuel has been used in a real world application on a construction site, with hopes that it could pave the way for the decarbonisation of the industry.
