Hydrogen co-combustion with ammonia may mitigate shipping emissions impacts, MIT finds

Burning ammonia as maritime fuel could lead to ‘devastating’ public health impacts, but co-combusting it with hydrogen could improve air quality, according to a Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) report.

The study claims under current legislation, switching the global shipping fleet to pure ammonia fuel could cause up to 600,000 additional premature deaths each year, with the researchers calling for stronger regulations and cleaner engine technology.

Low-carbon and green ammonia has been touted as one the key future fuels for shipping as the industry looks to decarbonise.
