In preparation for the 2024 Monaco Energy Boat Challenge, Yacht Club de Monaco (YCM) and SBM Offshore have unveiled a pontoon capable of hydrogen refuelling.
Taking place between July 1-7 2024, the 11th Monaco Energy Boat Challenge will utilise a pontoon capable of filling 30 cylinders and supply eight teams with green hydrogen. The teams have been offered a choice between nine or 13 litre hydrogen cylinders.
Each team is then free to estimate its consumption according to its choice of power source with the right to produce energy during a race. The 1.3 tonne pontoon has a 20m2 surface area of floating solar panels that are linked to batteries to produce hydrogen 24/7.
SBM Offshore installed the hydrogen pontoon last month (January) after it decided to make a “landmark contribution” for its sixth participation in the boat challenge.
