Holland has taken a step forward in the decarbonisation of its maritime sector, with a new partnership looking to convert an inland container vessel to 100% hydrogen power by the end of the year.
That’s the goal of Future Proof Shipping (FPS) and Holland Shipyards Group (HSG) who formalised the cooperation late last week (4th March). Together the team hopes to transform their inland vessel, dubbed the “Maas”.
“FPS is excited to be working together with HSG on the retrofitting of the Maas to run entirely on hydrogen. This future-proof ship will truly be a zero emissions vessel, a vessel to forge the way for a greener and more sustainable inland shipping industry,” said Richard Klatten, CEO of Future Proof Shipping.
In order to make the necessary transformation, the teams will need to replace the internal combustion technology with hydrogen technology, removing both the main engine and the gearbox, and installing a new modular propulsion system.
