Höegh Evi will develop a floating hydrogen import terminal at France’s Port-La Nouvelle, sourcing up to 210,000 tonnes of hydrogen from the Middle East, North Africa, and the Americas.
Under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with SEMOP Port-La Nouvelle, the two organisations will develop the terminal to “accelerate the shift to clean energy in Europe.”
H2 View understands that from 2030, the terminal will facilitate the import of 210,000 tonnes of hydrogen, according to the project timeline and dependent on the readiness of France’s hydrogen pipeline. The partners are currently collaborating on a feasibility assessment and design of the infrastructure solution within the port.
Via Teréga and the HySoW Hydrogen project, the import terminal will connect Port-La Nouvelle to major hydrogen transport infrastructures and strengthen the hydrogen industry in the Occitanie region.
“In recent years, the port of Port-La Nouvelle has made significant investments to expand and prepare the port for the future,” explained Hans Kerstens, CEO of SEMOP Port-La Nouvelle.
“Our focus is to become an enabler in the green energy transition. Port-La Nouvelle is eager to accommodate new types of traffic, particularly those associated with renewable energies and especially those linked to hydrogen molecules.”
Last month, a consortium of partners revealed it would develop a low-carbon hydrogen hub at Port-La Nouvelle to support future flows of clean energy, including hydrogen and other alternative fuels.

To accommodate the expected hydrogen expansion, SEMOP has begun major deep-water extension projects, such as increasing the port depth to 15.9 metres to facilitate larger vessels.
